Isn’t science a boring subject which most of us dreaded during school days? All of that biology, Physics, chemistry and those crazy atoms we studied about finally left us in peace, Right? They might have left us from the theoretical aspect but all the science still very much applies to us in day-to-day lives… We begin our day acting scientifically always, right from opening eyes, checking our phones, getting ready and yes Driving to Work! Welcome to the world of Taylor’s Theory of Scientific Management!
Web of Scientific Management -Taylor’s Theory
All of us are roped in a web of Scientific Management. We do all the activities that somehow cater to the productivity in our lives. Have you ever wondered how an awesome object like a car was manufactured? How all those tiny and gigantic parts were put together in less than 2 hours and Voila! Our favourite Black Beauty is ready! Yes till now you must have figured it out that there is a huge role of Scientific Management in this.
Origin
This awesome work was first coined by the great Management Guru, Frenderick Winslow Taylor, an American mechanical engineer. Being from the core industrial background, he gave meaningful insights into improving the efficiency of industrial operations and was also one of the first management consultants during the 19th century! He was one of the intellectual leaders of the efficiency movement and his ideas influential to the Progressive Era. What a great personality! Maybe now all those mechanical engineers could take pride in his glory too. And guys, he was a Pisces- Oodles of talents and intuition, so all the people born in march, get up and invent theories of your own.
5 Mantras of Taylor’s Theory
Every scientific thing is to have a core working principle on which it sustains for eternity. Why scientific management has been called as Taylorism-Because of tailor-made principles of the great Mr. F.Taylor! Taylor’s Theory tells us only to focus on the these 5 simple mantras:
Replacement of Old Rule of Thumb Method
It is not necessary to follow any schedule that has been coming down for many ages if it’s not giving the efficient output. When one says you have to sit and read for 9-12 hours to score the top marks, you will be foolish enough to that! In today’s era, we must understand that our brain is like a phone and on studying it heats up like a phone which heats up on playing Clash of The Clans!
It needs constant short breaks, meditation, and sometimes change of subject. And who says we must always read in the morning? Studying at night also helps in achieving the goal if done in a systematic manner. That’s why learn to optimize your output by efficiently using your inputs. Be innovative and result oriented.
Scientific Selection and Training of Workers
When a job has to be completed in a stipulated span of time and in a qualitative manner, selecting the right workman is a crucial step. We all are familiar with some advertisements that we see where a cricketer is sent to a Dhobi Ghat and a maid is sent to a cricket field! We can very well imagine what the results will be… So, select the right person or the right activity depending on the nature of work or your personality.
Even sportsman train a lot to perform on their work field. It improves the efficiency and effectiveness and they don’t get tired easily and win the medal in the end, right?
Cooperation between Labour and Management
This is what we all have been learning since the pre-school days, Team Spirit! A team is a group of people who together cooperate and work towards achieving a common goal. And we all love to be a team leader but then later realize it’s a tough job to manage all the team members too! Same happens in an organization, between management and the labour.
Maximum Output
All the above mantras hint towards one philosophy, Maximum Output! Work effectively and you will be efficient through out…
Equal Division of Responsibility
How many of you have handed over your piece of work to your other teammate and chilled? Have you ever thought that, that human being is also being taxed extra. Maybe your help would have eased that member’s work and your teamwork would have been really great! It is important to divide the work equally and equitably to achieve a proper synergy amongst the team. This what the great Taylor’s Theory teaches us.
The Automobile Company Which Succeeded due to Taylor’s Theory
We all know this name, its brands, is quality and its Legacy. The first mass car manufacturer of the 19th century, its none other than The FORD! In today’s time, cars are manufactured in just 2-3 hours by the concept of the assembly line and less labour force. But then in the earlier days, Mr. Henry Ford faced a major set back in this matter and took 12 hours to get 1 car out of the factory… That’s really backbreaking!
Earlier the automobile industry functioned by the way that the body of the car is laying at a stationary place where all the workers ran helter-skelter to gather the minor parts to put into that body. This just increased the fatigue rating to the highest for the workers. Gathering all these minor parts from various places and arranging took them 12 hours on an average to build up a car and the cost of the car shot through the roofs! At this rate, the mission of Mr. Ford was nowhere to be seen inching towards the goal. So later after consulting with Mr. Taylor, Ford’s assembly line was designed to be effective and efficient in terms of labour input and work output.
Tips and Tricks
Keep in mind folks, always have a scientific approach towards any problem. May it be even sitting on your couch and watching TV, watch at such intervals which will optimize your routine.
