Lessons which Mayo thought us in Human Resource Management
Elton Mayo who was best known for Human Relation Theory was born in Australia in 1880. His famous work includes work on Hawthrone Studies and he is also known as the father of Human Relations Movement.
Hawthrone study- Mayo conducted an experiment from 1927-1932 with around 29000 employees in Western Electric Plant in Chicago. The purpose of the experiment was to study how physical working conditions affect productivity. Two groups of workers were used for research. His conclusion from the above experiment was-
- Employees should be seen as a member of the groups.
- Non-Financial Rewards are as important as Financial Rewards.
- Informal groups have a great influence on employees.
3 things to learn from Mayo in HRM
Giving proper attention to employees
The organization should act like a family and employees should be treated as family members. Role of employees in the organization is very important as they are the one who works and handles the organization. They should be treated well, with utmost care, their voices should be heard, they should be motivated to take part in decision making etc. Nowadays employees are seen as the most valued asset to any organization as they are the one who is the reason behind the success of any company as it is there skills that keep the organization running. Employees act as the pillars of success for the organization so giving proper attention to them is of utmost importance.
Non-Financial Rewards play an important role
Financial rewards are important but non-financial rewards also have a very great influence on an employee. Apart from salary and other perks non-financial rewards such as recognition, status, job security, respect, employee participation, career advancement opportunities etc all play a major role. These rewards act as a way to encourage the employees and develop a positive working environment apart from these it also increases the motivation level and satisfaction level of the employees.
Importance of Socialization in Organisation
As it is said Man is a Social Animal so socialization plays a very crucial role in the organization. In an organization where there is n number of employees so developing a relationship with them is of utmost importance employees obtain a sense of identity through relations with other peers. Employees are more responsive towards informal groups as they develop a positive relationship with them. The system of grapevines, social groups etc can work wonders in the organization if it is executed well.
Apart from this Mayo insisted on the group efforts which helps to boost motivation of the employees as well as create a positive work environment.
